Places Left Unfinished – for 4 cellos, 7 mins (2011)
The title for this work is inspired by John Philip Santos’ memoir “Places Left Unfinished at the Time of Creation,” a haunting retelling of centuries of European interference in Mexican history mixed with myth and magic. While the work is not a translation of Santos’ work, I was inspired by his intermingling of the real and unreal into a coherent whole. The work is uneasy, provoking the listener to recall an unsettled past.
Necromancy – for string quartet, 6 mins (2010)
Necromancy is the ancient magical practice of summoning of the dead. Historically, this act took many forms, the most common being the invocations of spirits and the reanimation of dead bodies. Through dissonant harmonic language, I attempt to conjure a similarly grusome spectacle with this piece. Several programmatic ideas intertwine: an invocation of the spirits, the spell of summoning, the apparition of the spirit, a somewhat comical dance of the dead, and a final exaltation of the powers of this “black” magic.
Go!- for piano trio, 4 mins (2010)
Inspired by a train ride I took from Toronto to Montreal. The bumpy journey manifests itself through the moto perpetuo feel of the work, as well as the imitation of train noises.
